Jane Austen Weekend - A JANE AUSTEN DAY AT THE VILLA
Villa Gerini, Sesto Fiorentino 23-05-2010

The Jane Austen Society Florence presented a Jane Austen Day at Villa Gerini in Sesto Fiorentino on Sunday 23rd May 2010. This grand family home, set in superb gardens, was the perfect setting for this delightful Regency Sunday.

Buses were organized to ferry people from Piazza Santa Trinità in the historical centre out to the Villa and by 3pm everyone had arrived and were ready for a stroll around the lake to the ruins of what was once the tea house. Ladies fought off the brambles to save their muslin dresses and bonnets and parasols were shown off during the promenade round the English-style gardens.

There was a short shower of rain that sent everyone running for cover but was soon over and the sun came out again.

Phil Thomason stopped taking wonderful photos long enough to get the gentlemen and more than one lady involved in a game of cricket! Then followed a game of quoits and Blind Man's Bluff, followed by a scrumptious afternoon tea. The date scones were a favourite!

Many then freshened up, changed outfits and slipped on their dancing slippers. Others played cards and board games.

At 8pm the quartet "I Musicisti Toscani" tuned their instruments and the Regency Ball began, with period dances lead by historical dance master M°Donald Francis, Artistic Director of L'Atelier de Danse in Florence. A Buffet Froid Supper was served during the evening and, while some caught the first bus back at midnight, other stayed on dancing till 2am.

To cap off a magical Weekend, the first fireflies of the summer came out and the garden glittered as everyone made their way through the garden to the real world outside.

An unforgettable event, as you can see from the photos!

Jane Austen Weekend - GRAND NAPOLEONIC BALL
Villa del Poggio Imperiale, piazzale di Poggio Imperiale,1, Florence 22-05-2010

On Saturday 22nd May 2010 we held the GRAND NAPOLEONIC BALL at Villa del Poggio Imperiale. This was the first time in 200 years that this magnificent Villa had seen and heard such a sight!

The 113th line infantry division (under Napoleon 200 years ago) set up their tent in front of the Villa and the Corpo di Guardia saluted the officers arriving at the Ball.

From 6 till 8pm Donald Francis took groups through the private apartments of Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi (Napoleon's sister), Grand Duchess of Tuscany from 1809 till 1814. These grand frescoed salons have all been recently restored and Donald gave the history of the and frescoes! The photos taken by Phil Thomason (www.thomasonphotography.net) were like paintings!! We were all able to walk in the private garden where Elisa herself would have walked.

At 8pm the Ball began in the Sala Bianca on the first floor. The 113th Regiment marched in with their Flag. The 8 piece orchestra - La Cappella Palatina, under the direction of Maestro James Gray then began a March by Hummel and the Imperial court processed into the Ballroom and took their seats. Donald Francis then opened the Ball with a march that took everyone present past the "presence".
Donald had researched a programme of dances that were danced at Elisa's Balls 200 years ago. The first dance in the Ball programmes of 1810 in Europe was always the Menuet. Donald and I performed this dance to the "presence" (thank you Flavia Sparapani for those years of Baroque Dance!) and then quadrilles and contredanse followed.

Alessandra Tedeschi had created a sumptious petit buffet of snacks that were even more delicious than her usual creations. Lalla and Marika had concocted a punch based on a recipe of 1810 and was a hit!!

The sunset over the Florentine hills was glorious from the grand windows of the Ballroom. The temperature was perfect and there was a magic in the air that was palpable. It was as if the walls of the Villa themselves were thanking us for the wonderful music, the beautiful costumes and the happy people. It really was very special!

At 11pm a Buffet Froid with dishes from the Napoleonic period was served in the Galleria Rossa. Donald's pressed tongues were a favourite! And the rose, the pears in wine and the English trifle.

To top off the evening, the doors were opened to the peristyle, built by Elisa during her 6 years in the Villa. This room is not usually open to the public so we were all thrilled.

This was one of the most historically accurate re-enactments of its kind. The photos I have chosen are testament.
