In June I was fortunate enough to be able to assist in the preparation and set up of the exhibition "Napoleon and the Empire of Fashion" which opened at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, Italy on the 15th June 2010. Cristina Barreto and Martin Lancaster have put their priceless private collection of Napoleonic dresses and accessories on show in what is probably the best exhibition of its kind in the world today. There are 52 original dresses, complete with accessories, dating from 1795 to 1815.
It was a joy for me to see these dresses close up, to touch the fine fabric, see how the dresses were constructed and work with artists of the calibre of Cristina and Natalie Garbett, her assistant.
The exhibition is on till September 12th 2010 and will then begin a 5-year world tour. It may come close to you and should not be missed. Skira has published a 200 page catalogue, with full-colour plates and excellent articles. The Italian version is selling like hotcakes! The English and French version will be available on-line this Autumn.
I have never seen an exhibition of such beauty. Thank you Cristina and Martin!
